Explore Crystal Park

Crystal Park is a unique recreation area at an elevation of 7,800 feet in the Pioneer Mountains in southwest Montana. Quartz crystals are scattered liberally through the decomposed granite of the unique 220-acre site that’s been reserved by the Forest Service for the popular hobby of rockhounding. Quartz crystals are hexagonal (six-sided) prisms, with a pointed “face” at each end. The crystals found at Crystal Park can be clear, cloudy, white, gray or purple. They can be smaller than your little finger or up to several inches in diameter. Gray, purple and other colors are caused by minerals within the quartz. Gray crystals are known as “smoky” and the highly prized purple ones are called amethyst. Single crystals are most common at Crystal Park. Most of the crystals have little value other than as collector’s items.

Local Historical Sight Seeing

Historic Tour: Bannack Ghost Town

Bannack, once a bustling mining camp, first territorial capital of Montana and birthplace of vigilante justice, is now a state park. See the “Old West” come alive again at the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery in 1862 and Montana’s first territorial capital. Come walk the deserted streets of Bannack and discover for yourself the realities of the “Old West.” Bannack is the best preserved of all Montana ghost towns.

Bannack State Park is a National Historic Landmark and the site of Montana’s first major gold discovery on July 28, 1862. This strike set off a massive gold rush that swelled Bannack’s population to over 3,000 by 1863. As the value of gold steadily dwindled, Bannack’s bustling population was slowly lost. Over 50 buildings line Main Street; their historic log and frame structures recall Montana’s formative years.

Historic Tour: Butte

Underground city, brothels & Butte trolley tour gives a quick way to see and learn about Butte’s rich histotycopper Kings, stop at Anaconda Stack. From 1955 until 1982, the Berkeley Pit produced enough copper to pave a four-lane highway, four inches thick, from Butte to Salt Lake City, Utah and 30 miles beyond. When mining operations ceased in 1982, the underground pumps were shut off, and the Berkeley Pit began filling with acidic water, heavy metals and unique microscopic lifeforms. The Pit with its water and colorful landscape can be seen via a visitor viewing stand.
